Thanksgiving is here! What delicious dishes do you have planned for your Thanksgiving Day feast?
In preparation for this day, we want to teach you how to talk about your day in Chinese.
First let’s start simple: Thanksgiving Day is 感恩节 (gǎnēnjié).
感恩 (gǎnēn) means thanksgiving and 节 (jié) means “festival, holiday,” such as in “圣诞节 (shèngdànjié) Christmas,” “情人节 (qíngrénjié) Valentine’s Day” and the Chinese festival “中秋节 (zhōngqiūjié) Mid-autumn Festival.”
Instead of saying “Happy Thanksgiving,” you can say it in Chinese to your friends: 感恩节快乐 (ɡǎnēnjié kuàilè).
So, what foods do you plan on digging into today? Surely, you’ll have turkey and pumpkin? Or, perhaps corn and wine? Let’s see how to say these foods in Chinese:
Turkey — 火鸡 (huǒjī)
Pumpkin — 南瓜 (nánɡuā)
Corn — 玉米 (yùmǐ)
Wine — 酒 (jiǔ)
Grape wine — 葡萄酒 (pútáojiǔ)
On Thanksgiving Day, does your city have grand parade? In Chinese, parade is 游行 (yóuxínɡ). Or will you prepare a masquerade party in your home? What will you dress up as?
The Chinese Spring Festival is coming soon and you can learn how to talk about it in Chinese as well. Then, come to China to feel the difference between our festivals and yours! We hope it can be of help to you while learning Chinese.
