开玩笑 (kāi wánxiào) To Make a Joke (Intermediate)
The character “开 (kāi)” literally means to open but here means to make; “玩
(wán)” means to play and “笑 (xiào)” means laugh or smile.
Example:
A: Gēmenr, wàimiàn yǒu gè měinǚ zhǎo nǐ ne!
哥们儿,外面有个美女找你呢!
Brother, there is a beautiful girl looking for you outside!
B: (Pǎo chūqu hòu yòu pǎo jìnlái) Zài nǎ’ér ne? Wǒ zěnme méi kànjiàn a.
(跑出去后又跑进来) 在哪儿呢?我怎么没看见啊。
(Ran out and then ran in) Where is she? How did I not see her?
A: Hāhā! Gēn nǐ kāi wánxiào ne!
哈哈!跟你开玩笑呢!
Ha-ha! I was just kidding!
