The Chinese character “种” has two basic pronunciations: zhǒng and zhòng. “种” is usually used as a noun when pronounced “zhǒng.” For example: 种子 (zhǒngzi) seed. When “种” is pronounced “zhòng,” it is normally used as a verb. For example: 种地 (zhòngdì) to farm.
